Overseas Gap Training Grants

The Overseas Gap Training Grants program supports skilled migrants to obtain an Australian Certificate III trade qualification and transition into the local construction workforce.

Funding of up to $4,000 per person is available, within a total program budget of $60,000. This initiative enables candidates to build on existing overseas skills, gain recognised Australian qualifications, and improve access to long-term employment.

Eligibility Criteria

Funding is available to Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to offer subsidised places to provide a Certificate III trade qualification to eligible candidates moving to Australia and who have existing skills gained from working and / or training overseas. The process and evidence requirements for eligibility of any candidates is the responsibility of the RTO and may be subject to audit by the TFA, against the following criteria:

To be eligible for this funding, candidates must:

  • Reside in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
  • Be legally permitted to undertake study in Australia for the relevant Certificate III qualification
  • Be legally permitted to engage in full-time work in Australia during and after their studies
  • Provide evidence of relevant overseas trade qualifications or industry experience
  • Undertake recognised Australian trade qualification gap training
  • No other government funding is available to support the specific training.

Additional construction-related training (for example, Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card)) may be eligible for separate TFA funding. These requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Note: Costs associated with assessing eligibility, including Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or skills assessment processes, are not eligible for funding.
